Session 105 - Galaxies: Counts & Kinematics.
Display session, Saturday, January 10
Exhibit Hall,
We analyse bright-end (K = 10 -17) galaxy counts from a number of near infrared galaxy surveys. Observed near infrared galaxy number counts at low magnitudes are inconsistent with a pure no-evolution model. We examine a new, local underdensity model for K band galaxy counts. and find that the data point to a factor of 1.5 - 2.4 deficiency of galaxies out to a redshift of z = 0.10 - 0.26, depending on the k- and e- corrections used and the adopted values of the Schecter luminosity function parameters. The consequences of this result on the determination of H_0 are discussed.
