[108.08] Direct Detection of Stellar 3-Space Velocities, Distances, M/R Ratio

A. R. Hajian, K. J. Johnston (USNO)

We present a new method for the determination of accurate stellar 3-space velocities, distances and mass-to-radius ratios for single stars. This technique utilizes measurements of the Doppler shift from emission/absorption lines from a stellar target with sufficient precision to detect terms resulting from the expansion of the Doppler Effect to second order in velocity. We also discuss the design for a laser-metrology equipped Fourier Transform Spectrometer which may provide the necessary velocity resolution and stability to detect these quantities. Model computations of the spectra resulting from such a FTS are also presented.
