[11.04] Thermal Nature of the Far Infrared Emission in High Redshift Quasars

D. J. Benford (Caltech), P. Cox (IAS), A. Omont (IAP), T. G. Phillips (Caltech)

We have observed a sample of very high redshift radio-quiet quasars at 350 microns using the SHARC bolometer camera at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. These quasars have also been observed at 1.25mm with the IRAM 30m. We describe our derivation of the rest frame spectral index of these quasars, with an aim to determine whether the emission has a thermal origin and to constrain the temperature and emissivity index of the dust emission. Initial results show that the dust temperature is quite low, typically less than 40K even in hyperluminous sources.
