[12.02] Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy of SS433: Simulating phase-sampled Observations for XMM's RGS.

J. Cottam, S. M. Kahn, F. Paerels, A. Rasmussen, M. Sako, J. Spodek (Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory)

The unique X-ray binary SS433 with its relativistic precessing jets has been observed by every major mission since its discovery. However, main issues regarding the nature of the compact source, the jet acceleration mechanism and the accretion disk geometry remain unanswered. These issues can only be addressed with the high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the central engine available with the new generation of X-ray Observatories. Observations of SS433 with the RGS on ESA's XMM will provide high-throughput dispersive spectroscopy over the range of 0.5-2.0 keV. We present simulations of the RGS spectra for this target using a full raytrace constrained by end-to-end calibration data.
