Session 16 - QSOs and Active Galaxies.
Oral session, Monday, June 08
Presidio,
It has been suggested that advection dominated accretion flows are responsible for the activities in X-ray bright galactic nuclei such as LINERS and low luminosity Seyferts. If this is the case then central black hole masses can be estimated directly from measurements of core radio and hard X-ray luminosities with relatively few assumptions. High resolution radio observations (<< 1 pc) are required to avoid the contribution of jet activity. Such observations are possible (with VLBA and VLBI) for nearby (< 20 Mpc) galaxies. Core radio and X-ray luminosities of the Galactic center, M87, and NGC 4258 seem to confirm this relation.
