Session 28 - HAD III - Astronomical Journal Sesquicentennial.
Division, Oral session, Monday, June 08
Friars,
The Astronomical Journal, America's oldest journal for astronomical research, began publication in 1849 under the editorship of B.A. Gould. Publication was suspended in 1861 but resumed in 1886, three years before the founding of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and eleven years before the Astrophysical Journal. The AJ has grown from 198 pages per volume to over 2000 pages per volume, and its contents reflect the changing interests and research areas of astronomers over the past century and a half. Some of these changes, and some papers of particular interest, will be discussed.
