[31.02] Structure and Evolution of the Universe

R. D. Blandford (Caltech)

The Structure and Evolution of the Universe Theme is concerned with three fundamental Quests - tracing the growth of cosmic structure, exploring cycles of matter and energy, and probing physical processes in extreme environments. It encompasses cosmological investigations like measurements of cosmic background fluctuations, studies of the global evolution of galaxies like our own and explorations of the properties of black holes and neutron stars. Cosmic ray astrophysics and gravitational physics are also included within the theme. Some pressing scientific questions that should be addressed by upcoming and proposed space missions will be introduced.
