Session 31 - The Structure and Evolution of The Universe - I.

The program for the Structure and Evolution of the Universe (SEU) at NASA's Office of Space Science includes a program of research and space missions in the areas of cosmology, relativistic astrophysics, gravitational physics and tests of general relativity, cosmic ray physics, ultraviolet, infrared, submillimeter, and radio astronomy. Initiatives which are part of NASA’s Strategic Plan for the next five years include: a U.S. role in ESA’s Far Infrared and Submillimeter Telescope (FIRST), the Gamma Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), and Constellation-X, a high throughput x-ray spectroscopy mission.
The roadmap of planned candidate missions being studied for the period 2005 and beyond include: Advanced Cosmic-ray Composition Experiment for Space Station (ACCESS), Advanced Radio Interferometry between Space and Earth (ARISE), a Laser Interferometer Space Antenna for the detection of gravitational waves (LISA), and a ultra-high energy cosmic ray mission called OWL. These mission plans respond to a series of fundamental scientific questions that have been formulated as a part of the Space Science strategic plan.
