[33.13] Gamma-Ray Bursts and Host Galaxies

D. L. Band (CASS/UCSD), D. H. Hartmann (Clemson)

Various cosmological gamma-ray burst theories predict different relationships to host galaxies. We have developed a statistical methodology to test whether the galaxies observed in conjuction with bursts are consistent with the predicted hosts. This methodology accounts for unrelated background galaxies, and can be applied to both finite sized error boxes and the positions of optical transients. Application of our methodology shows that the simplest "minimal" cosmological model (standard candle bursts, no source evolution) is ruled out.
