[34.07] A High Throughput Modified FTS - A New Direction in Astronomical Spectroscopy

A. R. Hajian (United States Naval Observatory)

A modified Fourier Transforms Spectrometer has been implemented in conjunction with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer. We show that this instrument is capable of unprecedented spectral precision. The modified FTS is also orders of magnitude more sensitive than a traditional FTS, and is thus conducive to observations of faint astrophysical targets. We present spectra of Betelgeuse and Procyon which suggest that short integrations on bright stars using a moderately sized aperture equipped with a modified FTS can extend the state-of-the-art in astronomical Doppler velocity determinations.
