[36.08] STIS Echelle Spectra of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 5548

D. M. Crenshaw (CUA/GSFC), S. B. Kraemer (CUA/GSFC)

We present high-resolution UV spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on 1998 March 11. The spectra cover the wavelength region 1150 -- 3100 Å\ at a resolution of R = 40,000. We discuss preliminary results on the intrinsic UV absorption lines, which include L\alpha, C IV \lambda\lambda1548.2, 1550.8, and N V \lambda\lambda1238.8, 1242.8. Multiple kinematic components, which are all blueshifted with respect to the emission-line centroids, are seen in each line. We also give upper limits to the equivalent widths of S IV \lambda\lambda1393.8, 1402.8 and Mg II \lambda\lambda2796.4, 2803.5 absorption. We use the STIS spectra to investigate the physical conditions in the absorbing gas as a function of radial velocity, and to look for changes in the C IV components since the GHRS high-resolution spectrum obtained on 1996 August 24.
