Session 39 - Astronomy Education.
Display session, Tuesday, June 09
Atlas Ballroom,
From 1994-1997, the Charles Hayden Planetarium, Boston and Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have utilized funding from NASA IDEAS grants to develop and present City Stars teacher workshops. Geared toward inner city teachers with little or no background in astronomy, these hands-on workshops have succcessfully reached a total of 121 urban teachers.
This paper will provide an overview of the City Stars workshops, present a video tape of Noreen Grice (Boston Museum of Science) and Dr. Paul Gorenstein (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) conducting a workshop, and outline future plans for use of the teaching materials and methods.
