[66.14] The Transparency of the Pegasus Dwarf Galaxy

K. Krienke (Seattle Pacific U.), P. W. Hodge (U. of Washington)

The Pegasus Dwarf Irregular galaxy lies in front of a moderately rich cluster of galaxies. We have used HST images in B, V and I to measure the colors of the galaxies seen through Pegasus to test the method and to see how accurately it is possible to determine the complete reddening of a galaxy by this means. By comparing the colors of the members of the background cluster to the color-magnitude diagrams of unreddened clusters, we find that it should be possible to use this technique to obtain reliable measurements of the dust content of nearby galaxies, providing that the reddening laws are standard and that the extinction is sufficient.
