Session 69 - Starburst Galaxies.
Display session, Thursday, June 11
Atlas Ballroom,
We present high--resolution CO(1-0) data for NGC 6764. These observations are part of an ongoing survey to image barred Wolf--Rayet galaxies in CO(1-0) at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Wolf--Rayet galaxies are young starburst systems and provide an ideal sample for studying the early stages of the starburst phenomenon.
For NGC 6764 the molecular gas kinematics are consistent with orbits in a barred potential. The data also show evidence for the transfer of gas from the outer x_1 orbits to the central x_2 orbits. This inward progression of the gas is suspected to fuel the central starburst regions. These results, as well as the data for the other galaxies, suggest that barred Wolf--Rayet starburst galaxies are still in the process of accumulating a significant fraction of their gas in the central regions, unlike older starbursts which tend to show nuclear rings.
