[70.05] Fast Algorithm for Likelihood Evaluation of Mega-Pixel Maps

Maximum likelihood estimation of cosmological parameters from maps of the cosmic microwave background requires two computationally expensive steps: a \chi^2 evaluation and a matrix determinant. Standard algorithms, applied to maps with N pixels, require O(N^3) operations and are prohibitively expensive in CPU time. I present an approximate method requiring N^2 \log(N) operations and discuss applications for the MAP, Planck, and balloon-borne CMB data sets.
