[37.05] Models of Jupiter's Auroral Electrojet

We have made use of the dynamic component of JIM (Jovian global Ionospheric Model) to produce several models of Jupiter's auroral electrojet. We have produced each model by varying the electric potential drop across the auroral oval width between 104 V and 106 V. We show the resulting profiles of ion density and velocity as a function of altitude, as well as the velocity of neutral species in the model thermosphere. The ions move at speeds of up to several hundred meters per second, with the neutral speeds being approximately 20 percent of this figure. We use the velocity profiles to distinguish the altitudes of transition between flow which is dominated by electrodynamic forces and gas dynamic / Coriolis forces.
