[39.06] Titan's cloud layers from disk-resolved, near-infrared spectroscopy

The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) was used to obtain visible through near-infrared spectra of Titan in November 1997. The spectra have N-S spatial resolution (0.05 arcsec / pixel) and were obtained at 3 E-W positions on the disk. Titan's 0.6- to 1.0-micron methane bands are used to probe scattering in the atmosphere. An inversion of the data yields two optically thin and possibly global scattering layers in the mid- and upper-troposphere. More detailed radiative tranfer models will be presented in order to show constraints on the location and thickness of the cloud layers.
