[104.05] XTE Scan Observation of the Galactic Center Diffuse X-ray Emission

We have carried out a series of XTE scan observations of the Galactic Center region in the vertical direction (i.e. perpendicular to the Galactic plane). Owing to the large FOV and effective area of the XTE PCA, we could detect the extended X-ray emission with low surface brightness even at high latitudes (|b| > 5 deg). The diffuse emission was detected at least up to 20 keV, and its vertical spatial distrubution could be roughly modeled with a gaussian with the FWHM ~ seven degrees. However, the vertical distribution seems to be asymmetric, such that there is a hint of excess emission over the gaussian model only for positive latitudes. Location of the excess diffuse emission roughly coincides with the region where strong 511 keV line emission has been reported with OSSE, suggesting some association of the X-ray and Gamma-ray emission.
