[32.02] Gamma-ray Bursts

J. van Paradijs (UoA and UAH)

I review the developments since early 1997 in Gamma-Ray Burst research, which led to the establishment of their cosmological (Gpc) distance scale and the properties of the fireballs that produces GRBs: identification of low-energy afterglows, their broad-band spectral energy distribution, and their relation to host galaxies, the possible relation between GRBs and massive star populations, and finally, the probability that more than one mechanism can give rise to GRBs.
