[6.16] Emission-Line Probes of Circumnuclear Dust in AGNs

J.C. Shields (Ohio U.), R.W. Pogge (Ohio State U.), M.M. De Robertis (York U.)

Emission lines that trace elements subject to strong depletion onto grains provide a means for probing the dust content of AGNs. Infrared [Fe\,{\sc ii}] features are of potential use for this purpose, but have inspired considerable controversy in the past. We will examine the use of optical [Ca\,{\sc ii}] emission as an alternative diagnostic that can be compared with the [Fe\,{\sc ii}] results. Preliminary findings for NGC\,1068 will be presented.
