[68.13] HST Observations of M3

Eric P. Rubenstein, Charles D. Bailyn (Yale Univ. Astronomy Dept.)

We present the preliminary results of 12 hours of HST/WFPC2 observations of the nearby globular cluster M3. The well known blue straggler population of this cluster (Sandage 1953, AJ, 58, 61) is clearly visible in our (F555W-F814W) CMD of the center of this cluster. We compare the luminosity function of the blue straggler stars to the predictions of Bailyn & Pinnsoneault (1995, ApJ, 439, 705) to differentiate between various formation scenarios. We also present the results of our search for variable stars.
