[8.12] Spiral Galaxy Morphology in the Optical and Near Infra-red

The Ohio State Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey is a photometric survey in BVRJHK of a magnitude limited sample of 205 spiral galaxies from the RC3 with B \leq 12 and D \leq 6'. Our first use of this extensive data-set is to derive an H-band Hubble classification sequence for spirals. The morphology of spiral galaxies is often a strong function of wavelength. The H-band light is a better probe of the old stellar population, and therefore the mass distribution of a spiral galaxy than is the optical light. We present optical, near-IR, and color composite images of a selection of objects from the survey, drawn to highlight the advantage of a broad wavelength baseline for morphological studies, and the important systematic differences between Hubble classifications based on optical and near-IR data.
