[34.08] Undergraduate Research through Radio Astronomy at Haystack Observatory

C. McDaniel (Univ. of Massachusetts at Lowell), P. Pratap (MIT Haystack Obs.)

An educational initiative to promote undergraduate research through radio astronomy was started at the MIT Haystack Observatory a year ago under NSF support, with the aim of developing and testing pilot projects using the 37-m telescope. The student projects carried out as part of course work at various local area institutions or as individual research efforts will be illustrated. Special web materials such as tutorials, project handbooks, and user instructions have been developed, and a special collaboration was successfully established with faculty and students from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell near Haystack to test the materials. Remote operations of the telescope have been developed and are currently being tested for future use by institutions that are not within driving distance from Haystack.
