[103.08] Radio and X-ray Observations of the New Relativistic Jet X-ray Transient XTE J1748-288

The radio counterpart of the X-ray transient XTE J1748-288 was detected on 1998 June 7 by Hjellming et al (1998; IAUC 6934), and later establishd to be a highly variable radio source (IAUC 6937) which ejected jets moving at least 20 mas/year (IAUC 6938).

We report VLA and GBI radio light curves and VLA images, together with RXTE ASM and CGRO BATSE X-ray light curves, showing the properties of two major jet ejection sequences - each of which began with one-sided relativistic jet ejection \geq 20 mas/day. These resolved jets, which are also highly linearly polarized, are moving at \geq 0.93c since the distance to the radio source is \geq 8 kpc from an 21 cm HI absorption measurement made when the source was 0.5 Jy.

More than 32 epochs of VLA jet images in both total and polarized intensity, made from June through October, indicate that this is the first galactic relativistic jet source where the jets collide with other material and are decelerated - while strongly brightening at the leading edge of the jet. An analysis of the properties of the jets, and how their behavior relates to soft and hard X-ray behavior, will be presented.
