[16.07] Polarization of the Emission from M17: II. Comparison of Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Results

J. L. Dotson (SETI Institute), J. A. Davidson (USRA), C. D. Dowell (California Institute of Technology), R. H. Hildebrand, D. A. Schleuning (University of Chicago)

We present polarization measurements at 60, 100, and 350 \micron\ of the M17 molecular cloud. A detailed comparison of the data sets is presented. On average, P(60)/P(100) = 1.2 and P(350)/P(100) = 0.4, but the actual dependence varies with location in the cloud. Scenarios to explain this behavior are discussed. We also examine the possibility that the magnetic field morphology has been driven by the expansion of the HII region into the molecular cloud.
