We have carried out observations at optical and infrared wavelengths of a sample of galaxies classified as early-types in the Catalog of Isolated Galaxies of Karachentseva. We have found that the number of "normal" isolated early-type galaxies is very small, accounting for less than 5 significant number of merger candidates. The rest of the galaxies in the sample turned out to be spirals. On the basis of these results a plausible picture for the evolution of galaxies will be discussed.
