VLBI studies of redshifted HI lines promise to open a new domain in quasar absorption line studies by defining structure and kinematics in the absorbing galaxies. We present the first results of our observations of redshifted HI absorption systems at z = 0.2--1 towards reddened quasars, gravitational lenses, and compact radio sources. We use an ad hoc VLBI array that is presently limited to four stations by the availability of appropriate receivers at the line frequencies. These data are complemented by 50 and 21cm VLBA continuum observations which provide the detailed source models necessary for interpretation of the data at the line frequency.
