[66.01] FiberGLAST: The Fiber Detector Concept for NASA's Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope

FiberGLAST is one of several instrument concepts under development for NASA's upcoming Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) mission. Operating in the energy range from 10 MeV to 300 GeV, the detector comprises separate tracker and calorimeter sections, each constructed from modular layers of thin sheets of tantalum and orthogonal layers of plastic scintillating fibers. We present results of detailed simulations of FiberGLAST performance, including effective area, angular and energy resolution, showing that FiberGLAST will achieve a sensitivity approximately 10 times better than EGRET, with a field of view extending to ~80 degrees from the detector axis.
