[36.04] NICMOS Data Reduction and Analysis

A. Nota, H. A. Bushouse (STScI), NICMOS Team

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) provides data reduction and analysis software for use with images obtained from the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Capabilities exist to apply routine instrumental reductions and calibrations, as well as for combining and mosaicking sets of observations associated with a single target. While the standard reduction techniques are often sufficient for ``quick look" analyses, certain characteristics of the NICMOS instrument, as well the space-based environment, often introduce features in the data that require special attention. These include small fluctuations in the detector bias level, electronic "ghosting" and noise, and persistent signal due to large cosmic-ray hits. In this paper we review the current state of the standard processing software, including information about recent upgrades and enhancements, and also present information on each of the special features that users should look for in their data and the best methods for handling data that are affected by them.
