[107.01] A New Southern Survey for z > 4 QSOs

L.J. Storrie-Lombardi (Carnegie Observatories), I.M. Hook (ESO), M.J. Irwin (RGO), R.G. McMahon (Institute of Astronomy)

We have undertaken a new survey for bright quasars (R \le 19.5) with redshifts z > 4 in the southern hemisphere. The candidates were selected using the B-R color technique using B\rm J and R UK Schmidt plates for over 150 new fields from declinations south of \delta=-20. The plate material was measured using the Automated Plate Measuring facility at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Cambridge and the survey is underway using the Dupont 100" telescope at Las Campanas. We discovered 16 quasars with redshifts 3.8 < z < 4.8 in 1997 and we will present these, plus the results of our November, 1998 observing run.
