[5.01] How Fast do Radio-loud AGN Grow?

A. B. Fletcher, B. F. Burke (MIT)

The Angular Size Distribution of 4741 sources from the MIT-VLA Snapshot Archive has been presented in A. Fletcher's 1998 Ph.D. thesis. Assuming a Friedmann universe, and reasonable limits on the distributions of the redshifts, inclinations, and ages of the radio jets, it is shown that the mean advance speed of the MIT-VLA kpc jet structures is non-relativistic (v<0.1c). This may be statistical evidence for entrainment of material by the jets, as they pass from pc to kpc scales.
