In recent years, strong maser emission has been detected in many nearby AGN. Interestingly, all the maser AGN also show strong X-ray absorption. These observations provide us with a tool to probe the nuclear environment of AGN. I will discuss this scenario in the context of NGC4258 and ESO103-G35.
