In the last few years there has been a large increase in the number of X-ray identified HMXRB systems in the Magellanic Clouds. In addition, many of these systems contain an X-ray pulsar. The exceptionally large large number of systems (compared to the density in the galaxy) is probably attributable to an unusually active period of star birth some 10E7 - 10E8 years ago.
We report here on an extensive ground-based optical and IR follow-up programme which has allowed us to identify many of these new systems with Be stars. We will present results demonstrating the identification and discuss the characteristics of these systems.
