I review recent improvements in the spectral fitting program XSPEC and discuss future plans. Among improvements discussed are : scripting using Tcl, global fitting using a genetic algorithm, Bayesian inference, interactive definition of model functions, errors associated with the model, and photo-electric cross-sections. I pay particular attention to the challenges of high-resolution spectra from AXAF, XMM, and Astro-E.
