[100.08] f-Plane Simulation of Compressible Convection

K.L. Chan (HKUST, Hong Kong)

We present results of a set of 36 numerical experiments that simulate turbulent convection under the influence of rotation. The approach is 'large eddy simulation' and the convection is efficient (convective flux > 90% total flux). Our focus is on the behavior of the Reynolds stress and the mean flows. The results prompted us to propose that the drop of the solar internal rotation rate near the top of the convection zone (about 5-10% solar radius from the surface) can be explained by the presence of the stratification and a peak in the vertical profile of the Reynolds stress component \Large\overline{\rho\ vvertical\ vmeridional}\normalsize.
