[39.12] Panel Discussion and Summary

J.P. Huchra (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA), M.S. Turner (U. of Chicago)

Over the last quarter century, the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale as embodied in the Hubble Constant, has engendered a lively debate. As the millennium draws to a close, due primarily to significant advances in imaging nearby galaxies both from the ground and with the Hubble Space Telescope, the community is reaching a convergence on this issue.

This panel discussion will explore the issues remaining in the debate and the consequences of measured local and global value of H0 for cosmology. How well to we really know H0 and how well do we have to know it for cosmological studies?
