[40.09] Observational Evidence for Super Star Clusters as Progenitors of Globular Clusters

L. C. Ho (Carnegie Observatories)

High-resolution observations have recently shown that young star clusters of extraordinary luminosity and compactness (``super star clusters'') are commonly found in a wide range of starburst environments. The formation of massive, gravitationally bound clusters formation appears to be a dominant mode of star formation in starbursts. This talk will summarize the principal physical properties of these clusters, as gleaned from a wide array of recent multiwavelength observations. Super star clusters will be highlighted as powerful tools for understanding the burst mode of star formation and their potential role in studying the formation mechanism of globular clusters.
