[47.12] VLA Zeeman effect observations of the magnetic field in 22 GHz water masers

The nature of the magnetic field strength-density relationship in star-forming regions has important implications in star formation studies. Several observational studies of magnetic field strengths using the Zeeman effect have been made in galactic molecular clouds in the last decade. However, information on magnetic field strengths in high density regions is very scarce. H2O masers are an excellent probe of these high density (~ 109 cm-3) regions. They also exhibit an observable Zeeman effect. We present preliminary estimates of the magnetic field in star-forming regions from an ongoing survey of Zeeman effect magnetic field strength measurements in 22 GHz H2O masers.
