[99.02] CO Absorption Lines in the Interstellar Medium: Abundances, Depletions, and Excitation

R. Y. Shuping (Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy)

In this talk I will present the results of a multiwavelength study of CO absorption features. My collaborators and I have studied the 2.3 and 4.6 \micron\ gas-phase bands at high resolution and the 4.6 \micron\ solid-state feature at lower resolution, as well as UV bands from the GHRS archive. We have restricted our sightlines to O and B stars so that confusion due to gaseous stellar lines is eliminated. Our sightlines cover translucent to dense regimes, and abundance issues for these clouds will be discussed (including the CO-to-dust and CO-to-H2 ratios). In addition, some denser sightlines have both CO gas and ice-phase observations, allowing a direct measurement of CO depletion in the interstellar medium. The gas-phase observations also allow for excitation analysis, which we compare to cloud-type, abundance, and existing CO mm data (where available).
