[84.14] Metal Abundances in the Magellanic Stream

B.K. Gibson, S.V. Penton, J.T. Stocke (CASA)

We report on the serendipitous detection, and subsequent abundance analysis, of the Magellanic Stream, seen in \ion{Mg}{2} absorption by GHRS toward the background Seyfert galaxy III~Zw~2A. Unlike the one previous abundance determination for the Stream (Lu, Savage & Sembach 1994), which sampled a region only marginally outside the LMC--SMC common \ion{H}{1} envelope, III~Zw~2A probes the trailing Stream gas ~100\circ away from LMC (near the MS~V concentration, dubbed so by Mathewson, Cleary & Murray 1977). The implications for the origin and evolution of the Magellanic Stream will be commented upon.
