[91.02] Scientific Rationale for the Canadian NGST Visible Imager

While NGST will be optimized for observing in the infrared, it also offers tremendous scientific opportunities in the visible regime (0.5 - 1 \mum). This poster presents some of the science drivers for a visible imager on board NGST. Potential targets include: young starbursts and AGNs at high redshift (z=3-8); gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies; white dwarfs in the Galactic halo and globular clusters; RR Lyrae stars in the M81 group; the lower end of the IMF in Local Group starburst clusters; low surface brightness galaxies; the environment of nearby (z<0.2) supernovae; and trans-neptunian objects. We also briefly describe the current status of the studies on the Canadian NGST Visible Imager, which is one of three instruments proposed as a Canadian contribution to NGST.
