[13.08] Analysis of Mixing-Length Theory in Speroidal Convective Envelopes

D. H. Porter, J. Micheal, P.R. Woodward (Univ. of Minnesota/Dept. of Astron.)

Assumptions of various mixing-length models are tested against 3-D numerical models of thermally driven convection in radial deep envelopes. Correlation coefficients for estimating amplitudes of velocity and temperature fluctuations are measured. The mean radial temperature gradient is related to the imposed luminosity. Non-local issues are examined. The radially deep geometry is found to have a large effect on the geometry of convective flow with a correspondingly large effect on statistical correlations of fluctuating quantities.
