[13.01] HST/STIS observations of V471 Tauri: Probing the extended atmosphere of K2 dwarf star

J. Serena Kim, F. M. Walter (Dept. of Physics \& Astronomy, SUNY Stony Brook)

We present HST/STIS MAMA time-tagged echelle spectroscopic observations of V471 Tauri system(DA white dwarf + K2 dwarf). We used the passages of DA white dwarf in this system behind the atmosphere of the K dwarf to probe the extended atmospheric structure of the K2 dwarf star. We observed for 6 orbits in 2 visits covering ingress to eclipse and egress from eclipse sampling lines of sights near quadrature, through the L4 and L5 Lagrangian points, and just above the limb of K2 dwarf star. The chromospheric and transition region lines (SiIII, NV, OI, SiIV, and CIV) are in absorption against the disk of the white dwarf. We present our observations, and discuss preliminary results on the inhomogeneous atmospheric structures of the active K2 dwarf star.
