[34.04] In Situ Plasma Observations at Asteroid 1992KD

D.T. Young (Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, TX 78209), J.E. Nordholt (Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM 87544), J.L. Burch (SwRI), D.J. McComas, D.J. Lawrence (LANL), R. Goldstein, J.H. Waite, Jr. (SwRI), R.C. Wiens (LANL)

The Plasma Experiment for Plasma Exploration (PEPE) is a compact new technology sensor for in situ measurements of the velocity distributions of electrons and ions and the composition of ions. The PEPE energy range is 8 eV to 32,000 eV and its mass range extends from 1 to 500 amu. During the Deep Space 1 flyby of 1992KD PEPE was placed in special modes that concentrated on the detection of thermal ions and electrons that might result from the local evolution of plasma caused by outgasing, sputtering, or photoemission from the asteroid surface.
