[34.01] The Encounter of the Deep Space One Spacecraft with the Asteroid 1992KD

The encounter of the New Millennium Deep Space One spacecraft with the asteroid 1992KD on July 29,1999 represented the conclusion of the technology validation phase of the Deep Space One mission and the first encounter of the spacecraft with a deep space target. The validation of 12 technologies deemed important to the future of deep space exploration has been completed. Formost among these is the success of the solar powered ion propulsion system. The results from the mission's scientific instruments observations of the asteroid and environs will be presented.
