[104.02] The Emission Line Ratio of NII/SII and Luminosity in Spirals

J.H. Kim, S.S. McGaugh (Department of Astronomy, University of Maryland)

Physical properties of galaxies may be studied using different diagnostics. One important tool for studying spiral galaxies is the emission line ratio NII/SII. The NII/SII ratio is expected to increase with increasing galaxy luminosity. We test this hypothesis using a sample of 24 galaxies. This project builds on the previous study by Rubin & Ford (1984) by extending the sample to substantially dimmer galaxies. We discuss the applicability of this sample to the low surface brightness galaxies.
