[91.04] Multi-dimensional Burning in the Surface of Accreting Neutron Stars

R. E. Taam, A. Bayliss (Northwestern University), E. L. Sandquist (San Diego State University)

The behavior of nuclear burning in the hydrogen-rich accreted layer of a neutron star is investigated for a range of mass accretion rates near the Eddington value. Attention is focused on the two dimensional description of the behavior. The numerical results of preliminary time dependent calculations reveal a range of accretion rates where lateral propagation of the flame is unlikely to occur. The results are discussed in the context of the irregular bursting activity in bright low mass X-ray binary systems.

This research is supported by NASA under grant NAG5-7011. The computations were performed at the San Diego Supercomputer Center under grant NWU 203.
