The behavior of nuclear burning in the hydrogen-rich accreted layer of a neutron star is investigated for a range of mass accretion rates near the Eddington value. Attention is focused on the two dimensional description of the behavior. The numerical results of preliminary time dependent calculations reveal a range of accretion rates where lateral propagation of the flame is unlikely to occur. The results are discussed in the context of the irregular bursting activity in bright low mass X-ray binary systems.
