I will report on ASCA\/ and RXTE\/ observations of the early X-ray emission from the classical nova V382 Vel (=Nova Velorum 1999), which peaked at visual magnitude 2.6 on 1999 May 23.
The nova was not detected in the first RXTE\/ observation on May 26. Subsequently, it was strongly detected with BeppoSAX\/ on June 7/8, (Orio et al 1999, IAUC 7196), with ASCA\/ on June 9/10 and with RXTE\/ on 4 occasions (June 20, June 24, July 9 and July 18). The X-ray spectrum was highly absorbed and hard in the early detections, and subsequently became less absorbed and lower in temperature.
I will present an interpretation of these data in the framework of an internal shock model.
