[3.10] An Infrared Search for New Globular Clusters Near the Center of M31

N. Mostek, A. Taft, J. Elias (KPNO/NOAO), D. Geisler (Universidad de Concepcion)

This paper presents the findings of a new IR search for globular clusters centered on 12x12 arcmin region of the M31 bulge. The morphological characteristics of objects in 60 H band images, taken in 1 arcsec seeing or better, led to identification of 78 globular cluster candidates, of which 33 are previously unknown. The new globular clusters appear more compact, on average, than the known objects. Their discovery is presumed to be due to the higher spatial resolution of the observations. This research is supported by the Kitt Peak National Observatory site program of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, funded by the National Science Foundation
