Because of advances in computational technology, personal computers can now perform N-body simulations in real-time which contain much of the essential gravitational physics involved. We have developed a web-based java lab which allows students to explore interacting galaxy dynamics, including concepts such as gravitational tides, binding and escape energy, kinematic resonances, and galaxy evolution. Students have complete flexibility to design their own galaxy collision experiments and realistically model actual interacting galaxies. These models are sophisticated enough to also act as preliminary guides for scientific research. This interacting galaxy javalab is publicly available at http://burro.astr.cwru.edu/JavaLab.
This work has been sponsered in part through a National Science Foundation Early Career Award.
